Toshiba Portege M100

Great battery life and performance distinguish this ultraportable from the pack.

The Portege M100 is the Miata of ultraportable notebooks: sleek, fast, and equipped with features you'll enjoy showing off. Small and light enough to carry all day, the M100 weighs only 5.3 pounds including its removable DVD/CD-RW combination drive. The front of the black-and-silver unit slopes sportily and features a handy Wi-Fi switch, so you can conserve battery life when you don't need to be online. The M100 goes fairly far on one charge: It lasted 4.1 hours in our battery tests. A secondary battery in the modular bay will up the total battery life to 8.6 hours, according to the vendor. A strong performer, the M100 earned a PC WorldBench 4 score of 115, on a par with the 116 mark of Dell's Latitude X300, which has a 1.2-GHz/600-MHz Pentium M, too (the X300 had 640MB of RAM, however, while the M100 pulled off its score with just 256MB).

Though it has an unexceptional 12.1-inch screen, the M100 shines in other areas; for example, it offers surprisingly powerful stereo speakers with a volume wheel. The keyboard, while small, is not bad for a small notebook. Instead of having a touchpad, the M100 uses an eraserhead pointer, so if that's not your preferred pointing device, you may want to take an external mouse along.

The M100 allows tinkering under the hood, too. The 40GB hard drive is user-removable, fairly rare among light notebooks, and the modular bay lets you double your storage with an additional 40GB hard drive. You'll have to peel back the keyboard to upgrade the memory, but it's a simple matter to pop off a panel and remove two screws. An optional docking station adds desktop convenience. You get a near-complete set of notebook connections plus an SD card slot and an extra PC Card slot. All that's missing are TV-out and parallel ports. The only design weakness is the battery's side release, which felt a bit fragile. An excellent Acrobat manual on the hard drive and supplementary print materials explain everything.

Toshiba Satellite Pro A100

Two things immediately struck me by examining A100 for the first time. Its size and completion mark it clearly outside like semi-evaluated book, but also that it had some interesting contacts which mark it outside horde credits-chassised of book. The book is on the large side and the gray plastic that the curves to the bottom with before is not only inspiring. However, the black grills of speaker above the keyboard are thin and broad, which seems good and is helped by the presence of a logo of Harman/Kardon beside them. They resound very good also, with a good number of detail and any deformation, although there is no low to speak about. Another ordered visual contact is the band under the keys of F, which contains a small light on which comes when you tighten the key of function. It is a small contact but it has a useful function. Moreover a little special is the section with the left of the keyboard containing four buttons. The higher button once tightened towards the left launches your web browser of defect, whereas if you tighten it right side then it launches your player of media of defect enabling you to play, make a pause and to jump of the ways. Above these buttons is the button of power with a nice blue light above him, which orange rougeoie when the machines is dropped in the mode “makes an attempt”. However, Toshiba seems to have been a little with-top-generous with the sector devoted to these buttons. When I began the first time to type I estimated that the keys were a too mean contact and closes me together. It is not completely rather bad to be called with narrow but it encroaches on the speed with which you can type. Moreover because I took speed I noted that I caught the edges of the keys, which affects some keyboards of book. The keyboard is also not as firm as the best than I employed, although also I tested much worse. Under the keyboard is a rather small trackpad and some small, rather fragile buttons of mouse - they do the work at least. The size of the means of book you obtain a rather considerable posting of giant screen of 15.4in. It is a decent size to work above for a period prolonged without having to resort to have a cast. However, those with a sharper sight of eye can estimate than with this size a higher resolution would have been desirable. The quality of posting is acceptable, with adherent Tru-BRITE making sure that the colors are more luminous and more sharp that those without this coating. The reflexions of screen were also not as the bad one as some which I saw, although the angles of viewing were not impressive - they are seldom on books however. Glance around the book you will find a DVD Multi-lead right side which can create just about any type of recordable DVD, including discs of duel-layer and discs of DVD-RAM. Beside this that you will find a connector of modem, useful for when with wide strip is not available, and at the other side of the order you will find two ports of USB. Close to before you will find a switch to stop the radio operator top or.
